A calculator working out pixel density per EN 62676-4, showing that a 2 MP camera on a narrow lens beats 8 MP on a wide one.
CCTV is sold by megapixels, and megapixels say nothing about what the footage will actually show — what matters is density: how many pixels fall on a metre of scene width at the spot that has to be visible. The calculator takes sensor resolution, lens angle of view and distance, then places the result on the four thresholds from EN 62676-4: detection, observation, recognition, identification. The answer is counter-intuitive, which is the point: a 2 MP camera on an 8 mm lens gives 358 pixels per metre at a gate ten metres away, while 8 MP on a wide lens gives 134 — the first reads the number plate, the second does not, and it costs a third less. The layout comes from a monitoring desk: a fixed left panel with system status, content scrolling on the right, night-footage colours and a green LED that always means one thing — this threshold has been met.
